The Most Wonderful (ACHOO) Time of the Year

This time of the year many television commercials are referring to “cold and flu season” and how their products can help with prevention or relief of illness and symptoms.  According to the National Institute for Health, cooler weather with lower humidity helps cold and flu viruses become more transmissible and survive better and these illnesses begin to increase in October, peaking between December and February.  The habits discussed here a good practice not only for those living in senior living communities but for all of us to follow, especially during the winter months.

Hand Washing

Is almost always recommended first to prevent the common cold because it is not only simple, but very effective and unfortunately, under practiced by many.  Think about it, increased virus survival and events associated with the holiday season, such as travel, shopping, parties and gatherings, hand shaking and hugging.  The best practice is several hand washings a day with warm or hot water and soap.

Quality Sleep

Eight hours of sleep a night is what doctors recommend for optimal health.  Not getting enough sleep has negative impacts on the immune system and the body’s capability to fight off sickness.  A few tips for quality sleep are having your sleeping space quiet, dark, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature; not keeping electronic devices, such as TVs, computers, and smart phones, in the bedroom; not consuming large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime. Light exercise or stretching before bed can also help. At Sinea, we find several of our community members taking part in a short twenty to thirty minute routine in our Fitness Center before they return to their home for the night is effective in aiding in their rest.

Reducing and Managing Stress

Another thing that can negatively impact one’s immune system is the hormones released during stress.  Exercise is a great way to relieve stress, as well as spending time on a hobby, breathing techniques, or meditation. A popular and relaxing hobby by many in our community is listening to audiobooks to unwind.

Exercise

Has already been mentioned to improve the quality of sleep as well as relieve stress and is therefore a great way to significantly reduce catching a cold or flu and also aids in recovery from a cold or flu. At Siena on Brendenwood we have a solid fitness program that keeps us engaged and focused on not only our physical health, but our overall wellbeing.

Diet  & Vitamins

Not to be overlooked is the boost to the immune system provided by foods and beverages high in Vitamin C and Antioxidants.  High sources of Vitamin C can be found in leafy greens, leafy greens, oranges, tomatoes, papayas, and lemon tea.  Sources high in anti-Antioxidants are foods such as blueberries, strawberries, apples and raspberries, vegetables such as spinach, kale, artichoke, broccoli, beans, pecans and dark chocolate.  Living at Siena, it is easy to assure our Dining Service team has prepared you a balanced diet with delicious foods, that are rich with vitamins to feed our bodies.  Drinking plenty of water is also important.  Hydration and diet are also beneficial for healthy brain function and mental alertness. Always check with your health professionals before adding over-the-counter vitamins to your diet.

It’s almost ‘the most wonderful time of the year” again and you’ll want to be ready to enjoy all it has to offer.   Engaging in these simple habits will help to prevent the cold and flu.  If you begin to feel symptoms, do not delay in contacting your physician for an appointment or medication orders.
