Why downsize to enjoy Senior Living

Many of us find that we have accumulated a great deal of stuff over the years.  For seniors, all that stuff can get in the way and make living space less than optimal.  Decluttering or downsizing is a positive choice you can make.  You can live lighter and be less burdened with all that stuff. You also have the chance to take control over your belongings and do what you intend with them.

One reason to declutter is to simplify your life and free up time space and energy.  You will have a lower maintenance lifestyle with a home that is easier, less time consuming and safer for you to maintain and live in. Spending less time taking care of your home, yard and “stuff” means you will have more time to enjoy life.

A great reason to declutter as a senior is that you can make the decision about what you want to do with your belongings.  You will relieve your family of guessing what you might have wanted to do with certain things and having to guess what items are special to you and others are not. This gives you the opportunity to talk with your family about things that you would like to pass on to them.  By doing this, you are ensuring that you are saving things for your family that they really want.

Here are some tips to simplify the process:

·        Ask for help

·        Set a schedule

·        Pace yourself, do a little bit at a time to avoid burnout

·        Set up a system when sorting – keep box, “give to” boxes, items to sell, donations, recycle, trash

·        Start with an easy space

·        Take one space at a time

·        Allow time to reminisce so you can share the significance of a keepsake with your family

·        Make sure the things you are keeping reflect your current lifestyle, needs, wants and preferences

·        Trust your instincts when deciding to keep or get rid of something
