A Healthy Dose of Sunshine
Here in Rockford Illinois, there has been talk about the recent weather and breaking Average Daily High Temperature record for the month of February. This year, spring has sprung early and many of our community members at our Independent Senior Living Community have been enjoying the recent warmer days, especially the ones where the sun is shining.
Vitamin D is often called the “Sunshine Vitamin.” It is important for everybody to get the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin D, but especially important for seniors. Many health problems occur wholly or in part due to a Vitamin D deficiency that can be easily avoided otherwise. Vitamin D helps to absorb calcium, which is something the human body needs for many reasons, including healthy teeth and bones. Some of the health risks associated with a Vitamin D deficiency include:
Cancer
Heart disease
Cognitive decline
Depression
Osteoporosis
Decreased mobility
Falls – which may result in broken bones
Diabetes
The easiest and most recommended source of Vitamin D is sunshine. Since more is known now about the dangers of sun exposure, be sure to get outside before 10:00 a.m. or after 3:00 p.m., keeping in mind that skin must be exposed to reap the benefits. If you are in the sun during the peak of the day, though, be safe and use sunscreen and clothing for protection. Many doctors agree that 20 – 25 minutes of exposure to sunshine should be sufficient for most people. If you have any questions, consult your physician.
Another way to obtain Vitamin D is with supplements; drinking fortified milk and orange juice; consuming fatty fish like salmon, tuna, trout, and mackerel; or eating cereal, egg yolks or liver.
At Siena on Brendenwood, we are already uncovering the patio furniture, prepping our community gardens, and preparing our beautiful courtyard, park and patio seating for all to enjoy. Our community members find benefits of spending time outside absorbing sun in our peaceful and comfortable environment.
