Helping a loved one with the Downsizing Process for an Easier Lifestyle
If you have an aging parent(s), close friend, or neighbor you are helping, you may have mentioned downsizing and transitioning to a simpler and safer living environment at some point. Most likely, the conversation did not last very long, often because it caught them off guard. This is an important conversation to have, but realize it is one of those “easier said than done” things because it is something that you likely haven’t had to do before.
Sooner or later, you may try a more crafted approach to the conversation of downsizing possessions or have an opportunity when that topic is brought up by this person at a later time, either on their own or as part of a different conversation. When this happens, focus solely on the downsizing possessions aspect and point out the advantages of fewer things in their living space, such as:
• Safety – fewer things such as furniture, dishes, and other unused items and clutter like old files, papers, tools/hardware, old electronic devices, and miscellaneous household items make getting around the home much safer
• Better organization – makes it easier to find things saving you time and unnecessary stress
• Ensuring things go where/to whom they are intended to go – maybe you have a family member setting up an apartment or their first home or a specific charity that could use
Commit to and reassure your loved one that you are there to help them with this difficult and time-consuming process. Going through the things that have been stored away will likely bring up many memories and stories. Anticipate and be prepared for this. Take a break if needed, attentively listen, and ask questions. This is a great opportunity for deep conversation and learning things you may never have heard. Also, be willing and able to assist with donating things to specific organizations, sales (garage/yard/estate), and shredding and throwing items away.
Helping an aging family member or friend downsize their possessions will not be a quick or easy task. However, with patience, perseverance and love it can be a great way for them to share their memories and experiences with you to strengthen your relationship for future challenges.
